| Gloucester Street, the “main street” in Taradale is unique with core retail predominately contained within a traditional busy high street. The strip is 300 metres long providing easy customer access and short walking distances. A north – south orientation provides all day sun. Napier City Council commenced the $3.5 million Taradale Shopping Centre upgrade in Feburary 2010 with works expected to be completed in November 2010. Gloucester Street will have a new streetscape, lighting, enhanced pedestrian linkages and a newly created civic space. A revised parking plan forms part of the overall strategy as does further integration with public green space and services such as the library. Long-term, housing intensification and an urbanized lifestyle is envisaged within the immediate vicinity with the potential for townhouse and apartment-style accommodation further supporting local retail. The Beaton Group, as a major stakeholder in the area has been intricately involved in the consultation process. In line with the town centre rejuvenation strategy, the upgraded pedestrian linkage by Mitre 10 connecting Lee and Gloucester Street was completed in February 2008. The redevelopment of the old Mitre10 site at 276 Gloucester Street is now complete and Stage 2 of the refurbishment of The Busy Corner now in progress, both sites effectively anchoring the town centre’s rejuvenation.
