Retail Planning

The key to the urban renewal of Taradale is a vibrant retail mix that caters to the needs of the local population while being able to capture the multitudes of visitors to the area.

With timing of the Taradale Shopping Centre upgrade confirmed and works expected to be completed by November 2010,  stage 2 of The Busy Corner re-development is now in prgress.

Businesses that add value to the retail mix are current being sought. Substantial incentives including up to one year's rent free* may apply.

The Busy Corner Re-development

This 7000sqm block of land has been in the McDonald / Beaton Family since 1936 when it was both a petrol station and wood and coal store. As far back as the 1940s, the site was coined "The Busy Corner”. Throughout numerous changes in land use including paint, hardware, farming supplies and latterly a New World supermarket, the site lives up to its reputation.

Following relocation of the New World supermarket to the neighbouring suburb of Greenmeadows, the site is now anchored by a 1000sqm high quality 4 Square Supermarket which continues to generate high customer flows.

Passing traffic of over 12,500 per day, over 4 million vehicles per year!

With passing traffic numbers like this, The Busy Corner is one of the highest profile corner sites in Hawkes Bay.

The vision for this development is to create a landmark site for the town centre . The Busy Corner will become a retail precinct in its own right - an area of high activity, trading from early to late.

  • Pad site C: 460sqm with 33.5 lineal metre frontage

The retail mix plan includes a movie complex with seating for up to 250, aligned hospitality-based tenants, core retail and aligned services, all to support a vibrant daytime and evening experience.

Unit 11 - Gotcha Treats, opened December 2009

Gotcha Treats is a local Hawke's Bay business that produces home made chocolates, truffles, fudge and related products on site at The Busy Corner. The business was a regular at the Hastings Farmers Market before the store opened Christmas 2009.

Visitors can sit and enjoy chocotate treats and Aurum coffee or pop in for their favourite chocolate fix. Gotcha Treats also custom makes items for weddings, birthdays, gift baskets and dinner parties and has full range of wholesale products.

The chocolate brown and gold external canopy, oversized glass entrance door and embossed steel column facades complete the overall effect of an old worldly, traditional chocolate shop - with distinct contempory overtones!
